Description
The Granfondo Stelvio Santini (La Stelvio Santini) is a road gran fondo that starts in Bormio, in the Valtellina valley of Lombardy, and climbs to the summit of the Passo dello Stelvio at 2,758 m. The next road edition is listed on the organiser’s website for Sunday 6 June 2027, with a gravel version, LSS Gravel, on Saturday 5 June 2027. Riders use race numbers and chip timing, set off in colour-coded grids from Via al Forte in Bormio, and the organiser’s FAQ says the course is closed to traffic, although riders must still follow the Highway Code. Timed sections on the Mortirolo and the Stelvio give the event its competitive edge.
Routes and distances
The road event offers three routes, all published with the organiser’s distance and climbing figures.
The Long route covers 130 km with 4,270 m of climbing, with the Mortirolo followed by the Stelvio, finishing at the summit. The organiser’s pages also quote 157 km and “more than 4,000 m” in their headline text, so treat the exact distance with caution.
The Medium route covers 108 km with 3,050 m of climbing. The organiser’s pages do not state where it finishes.
The Short route covers 64 km with 2,280 m of climbing. The 2026 edition listing named Bormio, Sondalo and the Stelvio Pass.
The long route is the headline course: two big mountains, with the second as the finish line. The Mortirolo climb is about 11 km long with 1,200 m of ascent, averaging just over 10% with a maximum of 16%, and the timed section starts just after Sernio.
Then comes the Stelvio. The organiser gives the climb from Bormio as 21 km to the summit, with an average gradient of 7.2%, a maximum of 14% and 40 hairpin bends. The timed section ends exactly at the summit, 2,758 m above sea level, where the finish is.

Practical notes: riders on the long route must pass the Bormio exit gate, at the foot of the Stelvio climb, by 14:30; anyone starting the final climb after that hands in their chip and bib and continues at their own risk. The entry fee includes four aid stations (Sernio, the end of the Mortirolo descent, Bormio and the 3rd Cantoniera of the Stelvio), one at the finish and four mechanical assistance points. The official Santini jersey, included in the race pack, is required to enter the grids. The organiser asks for winter layers for the cold summit, and a bag of clothing is taken to the summit. E-bikes are allowed on the short route only. An official GPX is not confirmed, and start times for 2027 have not been published.
Registration
Registration is handled through the Njuko platform and is open. The organiser lists three price tiers for the road event: €80 from 16 June to 29 October 2026, €100 from 30 October 2026 to 6 January 2027, and €130 from 7 January 2027 until closing. Couple and group entries are available, and groups of at least 10 get one free place per 10 riders.
The regulations give a cap of 3,000 places, and the closing date is stated as 15 May 2027 in one version and 30 May 2027 in another, so check before you plan. The fee covers a personalised race number, chip timing, a Santini jersey in your chosen size and a pasta party from 12:00 at the Bormio sports centre (the 2023 programme placed it at Palazzo Pentagono, so check the venue). A medical certificate must be validated through DataHealth before registration closes. Bib collection details for 2027 have not been published; in 2023 the race pack was collected at Palazzo Pentagono in Via Manzoni, Bormio.
Full details are on the official website.
Why ride it
The long route finishes at the summit of the Passo dello Stelvio at 2,758 m, rather than returning to the start town. The Mortirolo and the Stelvio both have timed sections, so the two climbs define the day. The Stelvio alone is 21 km long with 40 hairpins, according to the organiser. The organiser also runs a gravel event the day before, with a combined road and gravel entry.
Where to stay
Bormio is the natural base: the start is in the town and the race pack has been collected in Bormio in previous editions, so arriving the day before keeps race morning simple. Two of our certified hotels sit in or just above Bormio, and two more are in Livigno, over the mountains.
Hotel La Genzianella in Bormio, under 1 km from the start. A Bronze certified hotel in the town itself, with bike rental, repair tools and supplies, laundry, maps for sale, route info and sports nutrition. After the ride there is a spa and sauna, and an afternoon snack, in a hotel that describes itself as passionate about cycling and offering Alpine hospitality since 1959.
Vallechiara Hotel & Residence Bormio in Ciuk, above Bormio at 1,600 m, about 2 km from the start. A Silver certified, family-run hotel in the pine forest of Mount Vallecetta with a view over Bormio. It offers repair tools, a fitness area, massage, guided tours, laundry and picnics, plus Valtellina specialities and a bar open from 7 am to midnight.
Montivas Lodge in Livigno, about 20 km from the start as the crow flies, over the mountains in a separate valley. A Bronze certified lodge for sportspeople with bike rental, repair tools, bike wash, guided tours, laundry and picnics, and 49 rooms promising a big breakfast, a big bed and a big bathroom.
Hotel Concordia in Livigno town centre, about 20 km from the start as the crow flies. A Bronze certified hotel used to welcoming cyclists and groups, with spacious rooms and a lounge bar with an evening buffet.
Rooms around Bormio fill early for race weekend, so book well ahead. You can also browse more cycling-friendly accommodation.
