Whether you are passionate about cycling or not, it is hard to remain indifferent to a Tour of Flanders, one of the spring classics par excellence, which has been taking place in the Belgian region since 1913.

Illustrious figures such as Mathieu van der Poel, Eddy Merckx, Johan Museeuw, Fabian Cancelara or Tom Boonen have cycled its cobbled paths and conquered the legendary Kapelmuur on more than one occasion.

But Flanders is not just for professionals: every cycling enthusiast will find a range of routes to explore in the region, suitable for all levels, alone, as a couple, with the family or with a group. To take in the details, the nuances of the architecture and the landscape and finally daydream about a journey that will not leave you indifferent. 

Cycle tourism in Flanders

Flanders is synonymous with cycle tourism and the figures leave no doubt. Some 12,000 km of cycle routes, 1,200 km of long-distance routes, around 100 spectacular circular routes, some 500 specialized cycling accommodations, 40% of travelers in Flanders cycle occasionally and a whole series of figures which show where we are.

Add to that the Flemings’ love of cycling, who pride themselves on cycling 8,500,000 km a day (according to Strava, they cover the longest distances) and you have a combination of travelers who want to explore the region and the Flemings that really make Flanders live and that’s what makes it so special.

When: In Flanders, summers are mild and somewhat cloudy and winters are long and cold, with temperatures rarely exceeding 29 degrees. The months of April to October are generally the best months for cycling, with a pleasant climate and perfect for demanding routes. Precipitation in Flanders is recurrent throughout the year, so we must keep this factor in mind when choosing the appropriate equipment for our cycle routes.
