The 10 best climbs in Asturias

Asturias is a cyclists’ paradise and a climber’s dream. Here are some of the most iconic.

1 – LAGOS DE COVADONGA

Distance 12,8 Km
Gradient 6,8%

Who does not know the famous summits of the Lagos de Covadonga? Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful spots in the Picos de Europa National Park.

But there is even more: it’s home to one of the most iconic climbs of the La Vuelta a España and with its own cycling trip. In addition to a spectacular scenery, it is a real challenge for all cyclists. The main reason? The section of La Huesera, with a slope of 18%.

Fantastic to go cycling in such an idyllic setting and recommend you to pay attention to the altimetría.

 2 – ANGLIRU

Distance 12,5 Km
Gradient  9,8%

Talking about climbs in Asturias is talking about the hellish Angliru. Iconic climb of La Vuelta, once again final stage in 2020. A terrifying slope average with the 23.5% of Cueña les Cabres.

3 – LA CUBILLA

Distance 28 Km
Gradient 4,6%

Well known in the region, this ascent has acquired international fame thanks to La Vuelta in 2019. Spectacular setting for a mythical ascent by its beauty and its length.

4 – COBERTORIA + GAMONITEIRU

Distance 15,1 Km
Gradient 8,4%

A combination of two climbs that stand out individually. All in all, a climb of a special category not to be missed to enjoy Asturias as it is the second highest road in the principality.

Did you know that the climb of Gamoniteiru will be the 18th stage of La Vuelta 2021?

5 – LA FARRAPONA

Distance 18,5 Km
Gradient 6%

Only behind Cuitu Negru and Gamoniteiru in terms of altitude, a climb at the height of the alpine colossi and with spectacular views. Alternate large slopes with a rest stretch or a slight descent.

6 – PAJARES + CUITU NEGRU

Distance 25,2 Km
Gradient 6,1%

The highest road in Asturias (1850 m) in combination of two climbs which are already a challenge. The section of the first 17 kilometers towards the ascent of Pajares, very common in La Vuelta, connected via Brañillín to Cuitu Negru, to crown the highest peak in the Asturian region.

7 – PRAERES DE NAVA

Distance 3,8 Km
Gradient 13%

“Ascent”, famous for its role as the last unprecedented stage in La Vuelta and with new asphalt just before the event. Shorter than others, but with a frightening % per kilometer.

8 – ALTO DEL ACEBO

Distance 9,4 Km
Gradient 7,9%

The inclusion in La Vuelta 2019 returne its fame, once historical in the great Spanish tour.. With different slopes, the most famous Cangas del Narcea offers us the most difficult sections at the beginning and at the end.

9 – COTO BELLO

According to the Council of Aller, this climb is misleading in requirements. There are no major inclines, but rather a constant 8-9% slope. A more typical ascent of the Tour de France.

 10 – ERMITA DEL ALBA

A gradient over 11% with slopes of 20 percent makes this mountain pass worthy a place in this selection of climbs in Asturias. With an alpine landscape, the horseshoe-shaped curves and the slopes of the last 3 kilometers are a real challenge to reach the sanctuary of the Virgen del Alba.
