The dreaded Sterrato of the Antenas del Maigmó
The Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana is experiencing its queen stage today with an unprecedented finish in the Antenas del Maigmó, causing some controversy.
Today, the Volta a la Comunitat Valencia 2022 allows us to enjoy the most powerful stage of those planned these days of pure cycling in the Comunitat Valenciana. Starting from Alicante, the cyclists will face leading mountain passes such as the Coll de Rates or Benifallim, a major challenge to close the stage which can create more than one surprise.
Specific this ascent to the Alto de las Antenas del Maigmó, a climb of about 5.5 km with an average gradient of more than 9%. However, it is not only the hardness of the average gradient that demands extra energy at the end of the stage: the last three kilometers are pure sterrato, with a particularly tough 11% final kilometer.
Precisely this section of the stage gave rise to discussions, partly after complaints from the general classification leader, Belgian Remco Evenepoel, who considered that this section is not suitable to be climbed on a racing bike. A complaint that the organizers have taken into account and stated that they have worked to make the final climb of the Antenas del Maigmó a unique spectacle and not a chaos of falls and descents from the bike.
Teams such as Kern Pharma explored this stage finish in their first pre-season training camp in Alicante, confirming the toughness of the climb, but with very positive comments about how entertaining the race’s ascent could be.
