Gran Fondo BIBE Transbizkaia
Description
Gran Fondo BIBE Transbizkaia will take place on Sunday, June, with start in Durango, in the province of Bizkaia, Basque Country. Considered one of the most demanding road‑cycling events in northern Spain, this gran fondo offers a true endurance challenge across some of the most iconic mountain roads of Bizkaia.
The route explores the interior and mountainous heart of Bizkaia, combining steep climbs, narrow secondary roads and constant elevation changes. Riders face a demanding terrain that reflects the strong cycling culture of the region, finishing with the symbolic ascent to the Sanctuary of Urkiola, one of the most emblematic climbs in the Basque cycling landscape.
The event offers three distance options. The Gran Fondo route covers approximately 179 km with around 3,500 metres of elevation gain, including eight mountain passes and a continuous succession of steep ramps. The Medio Fondo option spans about 122 km with roughly 2,450 metres of elevation gain, providing a shorter but still highly demanding mountain challenge. A third option, La Piccola, offers a distance of around 75 km with approximately 1,200 metres of elevation gain, allowing riders to experience the character of the event in a more accessible format.
Gran Fondo BIBE Transbizkaia 2026 is a non‑competitive cyclo‑sportive event, focused on personal endurance, self‑improvement and controlled riding rather than racing. The toughness of the route, combined with the dramatic Basque landscape, makes it a benchmark event for cyclists seeking one of the hardest gran fondos in the Iberian Peninsula.
Thanks to its demanding profile, strong organisation and legendary finishing climb, the Gran Fondo BIBE Transbizkaia has established itself as a reference event for cyclists looking to test their limits on classic Basque mountain roads.
