Description

The Maratona dles Dolomites is a road gran fondo that returns on Sunday 4 July 2027 for its 40th edition, starting from La Villa in Alta Badia, South Tyrol, Italy. Riders choose between three courses of 138, 106 and 55 km, all looping through the Sella massif and the surrounding Dolomite passes. The roads are closed to traffic for the event, riders leave in timed start groups from 6.30 am, and the organiser publishes finishing times and diplomas online. Entry is by draw, and pre-registration for 2027 opened on 14 October 2026.

Routes and distances

The organiser publishes three courses, each with its own climbs, gradients and elevation figures.

The Maratona course covers 138 km with 4,230 m of climbing, over Passo Campolongo, Passo Pordoi, Passo Sella, Passo Gardena, Passo Giau, Passo Valparola (from Pocol, with Passo Falzarego on the way) and the short, steep Mür dl Giat.

The Middle course covers 106 km with 3,130 m of climbing. It uses Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella, Gardena, Valparola (climbed from Andraz) and Mür dl Giat, but not Giau.

The Sellaronda course covers 55 km with 1,780 m of climbing, over four passes around the Sella massif: Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella and Gardena.

Think of the long course as a Dolomite pass collection. Passo Pordoi (2,239 m) runs 9.2 km at 6.9% on average, with the Fausto Coppi monument, while Passo Giau (2,236 m) is the hardest, 9.9 km averaging 9.3% and reaching 15%, with a refreshment point. The final sting is the Mür dl Giat, only 370 m long but averaging 12.4% and touching 19%, with a fan zone.

Practical notes: riders assemble in La Villa from 5.30 to 6.15 am, and the first group starts at 6.30 am. Groups are allocated by previous finishing times, and starting before your group means disqualification. Cut-offs apply: Corvara towards Campolongo (55 km) at 11.30 am and Cernadoi towards Passo Giau (76 km) at 11.50 am, after which riders are sent on the middle course. Finish times are 1.00 pm for the 55 km course and 4.45 pm for the 106 and 138 km courses. An approved hard helmet and a long-sleeved waterproof rain jacket are mandatory. The organiser offers a zipped GPX file for each course on its route pages.

Registration

Entry for riders not resident in Italy starts with online pre-registration at maratona.it, which runs from 14 October to 10 November 2026 and costs €3.00 per person. Groups of two or more are drawn as one unit, and the draw takes place in the second half of November 2026.

Drawn riders pay €185.00 in total (€165.00 registration, €10.00 chip deposit and €10.00 one-day licence) by 10 December 2026, and must complete registration, including a cycling-sport medical certificate on the 2027 template, by 26 May 2027. A total of 400 charity numbers are sold in two batches, and tour operator packages need no pre-registration. Starting numbers are collected in San Leonardo, Badia, with a digital voucher and original ID, from the evening of Wednesday 30 June to 7 pm on Saturday 3 July.

Full details are on the official website.

Why ride it

The Maratona packs several of the great Dolomite passes into a single closed-road day, from Campolongo to Pordoi, Sella, Gardena and, on the long course, Giau and Valparola. The three courses mean the same start line works for a full 4,230 m day or a 55 km, 1,780 m Sellaronda loop. The organiser also runs a Maratona Village in San Leonardo and a children’s Maratona on 3 July, and 2027 marks the 40th edition.

Where to stay

Alta Badia gets busy around race week, so arriving the day before is wise: bib collection runs in San Leonardo until the evening before the event, and the grids at La Villa open at 5.30 am. Our certified hotel in this part of South Tyrol is in the next valley rather than at the start, so plan your transfer on race morning carefully.

SMY Koflerhof Dolomiti in Rasun di Sopra, in the Anterselva valley, about 25 km from the start as the crow flies (it is in a different valley, so allow for the road distance). This Silver certified hotel offers bike rental, e-bikes, bike repair tools and supplies, route information, a daily weather forecast and parking. After a big mountain day, there is a wellness centre with an indoor pool, four saunas, Kneipp treatments, a cold room and a relaxation area, plus a restaurant specialising in Tyrolean cuisine. The hotel describes the area as busy with Giro d’Italia stages.

Book early: places near the start fill quickly in race week. You can also browse more cycling-friendly accommodation.
