Marchena – Ecija
Description
To begin our fifth stretch along the ancient Roman route through Andalusia, we’ll follow the Vía Verde de la Campiña, a well-marked trail that leads us directly to Astigi (Écija). This segment covers 47.2 kilometers with a total elevation gain of 216 meters.
We’ll be welcomed by the Bullring, built atop the remains of the Roman amphitheatre. Other highlights include the Municipal Historical Museum, the Roman pond, the Valdehermoso Palace, and of course, the archaeological site at Plaza de Armas.
Écija is a key point along the route—once the capital of the Conventus Astigitanus, one of the four districts of the Roman province of Baetica. It also serves as a junction where we can choose between two onward directions. For now, we’ll continue along the original route, heading towards Almodóvar del Río, which marks the beginning of Stage 6.
