Two climbs, really a challenge, but together it’s the most difficult mountain pass on the Costa Blanca. A “special category” of 20 kilometers. Constant and almost uninterrupted ascent, especially over the last 10 kilometers. From Sella to the famous Puerto de Tudons, then through the Sierra de Aitana to the roof of Alicante, where the military base was located. Mama Mia!
When it comes to the characteristic climbs of the Vuelta Ciclista de España, Xorret de Catí is undoubtedly very well known to the international peloton and to all cycling enthusiasts. The Sierra del Maigmó with only 3.74 kilometers, but with an average degree of almost 13% and slopes of more than 20%, a very terrifying climb.
It is impossible to talk about the Costa Blanca and cycling without mentioning the Coll de Rates. One of the most famous, between the Ferrer mountains and the Sierra del Carrascar, without great slopes, but its curves and landscapes will not leave you indifferent. For this reason, it is a must see for any cyclist visiting the area.
Another impossible climb, one of the classics of La Vuelta, where Chris Froome or Tom Dumoulin won. The Alto del Puig de la Llorença, which ends in the urbanization named after, is one of the destinations marked in red on the agenda of any cyclist visiting the Costa Blanca, due to its hardness and of its superb views.
The winding route but without major slopes, is one of the most important climbs in the region. The height takes us to Vall d’Ebo in Alicante’s Marina Alta, from difficult to less, allowing us to enjoy the spectacular views in the last section.
Another of the climbs that stands out for the hardness of the slopes and which has acquired great fame since the new asphalt and the end of the stage of the Vuelta a la Comunidad Valenciana in 2020, with an exhibition by Tadej Pogacar. Located in the Cycling Friendly municipality of Altea, its 12% average even makes it surpass the Xorret de Catí. A discovery that puts you to the test.
Another of the classic climbs of the Valencian Community, usual in La Vuelta and also on many cycle routes back to Benidorm, Altea or Calpe, after having also crossed Tudons. Average reachable, beautiful view, but as the finale of many routes.
A single procedure, not?
A combination of two climbs of great beauty with many curves. With a downhill section that connect the two climbs, the ascent to Torremanzanas brings us a loose slope above 14%, but it is still a third category mountain pass like Benifàllim.
One of the climbs recommended by associations and institutions of the Costa Blanca, and crossing point from Xixona in almost all editions of the Vuelta a la Comunidad Valenciana. It doesn’t have very steep slopes but it is a very long climb.
