Coll de Pal
Description
Coll de Pal is a special-category (HC) mountain pass. The route covers almost 20 kilometers, with a positive elevation gain of 1,284 meters and an average gradient of 6.6%, featuring ramps of up to 12%-13%, making it one of the toughest mountain passes in Catalonia. The journey starts from the town of Bagà, heading towards the BV – 4024 road. After a demanding first kilometer with some steep ramps, there is a slight descent until kilometer 2. From kilometer 3, the ascent is continuous, with gradients ranging between 6% and 8%. Around kilometer 4, we pass under the Gréixer viaduct. Between kilometers 5 and 7, we encounter the most challenging sections of the entire ascent, including a long straight stretch with maximum gradients close to 10%. Near kilometer 7, after a large hairpin curve, the difficulty decreases significantly. This is where we begin to enjoy panoramic views of the Berguedà region. This part of the pass has an average gradient between 7% and 8%. The south-facing orientation of this pass should be considered, causing high temperatures in the summer. Around kilometer 9, the landscape changes, transitioning from a wooded area to a more exposed zone with splendid views. As we ascend, there is a steep drop on our right and a very sharp rocky area parallel to us, with Pedraforca in the background. During kilometers 10 to 12, the gradients average around 8%, with occasional ramps exceeding 10%. Upon reaching kilometer 11, we pass the Mirador de la Devesa (1550 meters). Between kilometers 13 and 15, the gradient remains similar, ranging between 6% and 8%, but with some 10% ramps in this stretch. At an altitude of 1700 meters, we leave behind the access to Mirador de l’Orri on the left. From kilometer 14 to 17, we approach the vicinity of the Coll de Pal Chalet, where the gradient gradually reduces to a comfortable 5%. However, from this point onward, the gradient increases again, and being at an altitude close to 2000 meters, harsh weather conditions and strong winds may occur. The pass concludes at the Tosa divide, reaching the summit at an altitude of 2106 meters in an incomparable setting.
