Ribadesella: Ruta de las Iglesias del Oeste

Description

This demanding gravel route begins in Ribadesella and explores the western highlands of the municipality, following a challenging loop through forested hills, remote villages, and historic sites. The name “Iglesias del Oeste” (“Churches of the West”) refers to the rural chapels and churches scattered throughout the area, many of which are centuries old and nestled in scenic locations.

The route features a mix of gravel paths, steep climbs, and technical descents, making it ideal for experienced gravel riders looking for a physically and technically engaging ride. The elevation gain of over 1,000 meters adds to the challenge, but rewards riders with panoramic views and a deep immersion in Asturias’ natural and cultural heritage.

Highlights:

  • Remote churches and chapels hidden in the hills.
  • Long gravel climbs and fast descents through forested terrain.
  • Panoramic views of the Cantabrian coast and inland valleys.
  • Quiet, off-the-beaten-path atmosphere with little to no traffic.

Recommendations:

  • Gravel bike with low gearing and tires of at least 40 mm.
  • Bring plenty of water and snacks – services are scarce along the route.
  • GPS navigation is essential due to the complexity of the terrain and intersections.
