Vía Verde de los Montes de Hierro
Description
MTB route running along 41.94 km of the Vía Verde de los Montes de Hierro (Greenway), the longest in Biscay, from Traslaviña train station (Artzentales) to the cliffs of Itsaslur (Muskiz). The route follows the old mining railway and reaches enclaves of great ecological value, such as the protected biotope of Los Montes de Triano or La Playa de La Arena, in the heart of the Ría de Barbadún (estuary) (Natura 2000 Network).
Mining remains abound along the route. Along the route, we will find loading docks, calcination ovens and old open-cast mines, such as the impressive cut over which the Museo de la Minería del País Vasco (Country Mining Museum) overlooks. Other deposits have been converted into lakes and green areas.
The route ends in Itsaslur (Muskiz), a path that runs along the cliffs of the Cantabrian Sea and once the great mining loader of Biscay and one of the largest mining reserves in the Basque Country. We will have left behind the municipalities of Artzentales, Sopuerta, Galdames, Abanto-Zierbena and Zierbena.
